Beyoğlu Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church

Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church is the oldest Greek church in Pera, located next to the Hacopulo Passage on Istiklal Street. It was built in 1804. The construction of the church was allowed because Dimitris Muzuris, one of the founders of the church, was a friend of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Izzet Efendi. At that time, the construction of new churches was not allowed. However, it was allowed to build new churches instead of old ones. The land where the church is located was donated by the Hacopoulos Family, who also owns the passage next to it. In 1831, Sultan II. With Mahmud's permission, the church was enlarged and the bell tower was built in 1837.

The Church of Virgin Mary, which is the only church that was not damaged during the events of 6-7 September 1955, was damaged during the bomb attack on the British Consulate nearby on 20 November 2003. After the restoration and repair, it was reopened for worship after the ceremony held on 21 November 2009.
